Every now and then I like to give some digital shout outs to other stuff I am reading. Usually this happens on a Friday. But it doesn’t happen every Friday.

Here’s the latest batch…

I work as the college ministry intern for First Baptist Church of Brownwood. Which means I do their college ministry under the supervision of their Student Pastor, who is becoming a quick friend. Anyway. I thought it might be useful to keep up on what’s going on out their in the world of college ministry. Let me be honest with you: there honestly isn’t a ton going on. This is something that the church in general needs to be working on. That being said, the best blog I’ve found out there so far is College Ministry Thoughts. It’s written by Chuck Bomar, who has a lot of college ministry wisdom from years of experience.

That’s what I’m reading as far as keeping up on things goes. What about you? What blogs do you read to keep up with what’s going on in your line of work, or your hobby? Is there a better (or are there more…) college ministry blog out there?

Since before we started dating, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading the thoughts and musings of my girlfriend. Admittedly, she doesn’t have a lot there right now, but I’ve encouraged her to use it more regularly. She sees things differently than I do, and sometimes I need to see things through a softer lens than I do. She’s good at providing that lens. So. Head on over and see what she’s talking/thinking about in her life full of grace.

Hope you enjoy,

Stippick

Wanted to share about some blogs you should check out.

My good friend Chris Willis has recently begun sharing with the blogosphere about his musical journey. While he and I don’t always agree on music, there are few people whose musical opinion I respect more. You should definitely stop by and look at what he’s been listening to, and discovering.

Quite a while back, another one of my good friends Mike Jones started a blog called Wonderball. He took a little hiatus, but from what I understand, he’s back in business. Here’s what he has to say about his own blog:

Hey, I’m Mike. I’m 22 and currently working on a Masters in Tax. I’m a pretty conservative person but I’m willing to consider anything. I like to talk about everything and you’ll see a lot of that on this blog.

Take some time and check out his thoughts.

I want to be a writer.

I know that probably comes as a shock to most of you. If you were to look at my life from the outside you might think: “He would like a mediocre job and to sit on the couch and read and watch tv for the rest of his life.” You’d only be 15% right in that thinking though. I say 15%, because honestly if we could make a living at it who of us wouldn’t just be a little lazy and do our hobbies?

So. Anyway. I want to be a writer. An established, published writer, who you will someday say things about like: “Have you read the latest by Stippick? Powerful stuff man. Powerful stuff.”, or “Man, that article by David Stippick the other day made me laaauuugh!”. You know. The normal things like that.

I want to write fiction and non-fiction. I want to write articles. I’d even love to write a screenplay for a movie, and create and write for a television show. I think I can do those things. Although, that movie may only get made out of pity by my good friend James Hunt who I know will one day be making all the hit movies you’re going to see.

I also realize that this doesn’t just happen. It takes discipline to work at it, and being able to listen to the critiques of loved ones, and people you have never met, and being willing to hear “No”. But also knowing that some of those loved ones are just to close to see that you might actually be good at something they hadn’t noticed, and those people you’ve never met may not be the people who need to hear what you have to say.

So anyway. As far as the discipline goes, I am even so scattered on here. Part of that is because I’m honestly scared to write. Anyone who can type and knows how to get on the internet can have a blog. So what makes me different than any of those people? I don’t know. I honestly don’t. Maybe there isn’t anything. Maybe in eight years I realize that this dream will never happen, and I’ve wasted a lot of time and $25 a year on a domain name, and just give up. But right now…there’s just something inside of me, and God is pushing me telling me that I do have something to say. I have read this blog post on Stuff Christians Like several times in the last few days as I struggle with that, and here’s what I’ve decided.

I’m a good writer. I’m not great. But I’m above average. God has given me a passion for it, and He’s given me talent for it. It is something I need to chase after until He tells me to stop. I know that that means I’ll spend quite some time working a day job. But I’m ok with that. If that is what is required of me to get where I think He is pointing me, then I really have no option but to do that.

So. I’ve declared it publicly. Which…honestly doesn’t mean much other than that now you all know for sure. And you might ask questions about it. And that might make me uncomfortable for a while. But I shouldn’t be uncomfortable in my own skin. Now when people ask me what I want to do, I can really say “I want to be a writer” (because I’ve made that fact known on the interwebs on my blog that has a steady readership of two), and “I’m actually working on a book right now” (because that’s actually true).

I want to be a writer.

P.S. If  you know anyone in the biz, let me know.

Wanted to share these

I try to make it to the txt3 blog as often as possible, which isn’t as often as I would like, so when I went to check it out a little bit ago, I had a lot of catching up to do. I read two posts and watched a video of Penn Gillette that hit me pretty hard, and I really wanted to share them. I think I might be behind the rest of the world on seeing the video, but it’s still got a challenging message. Like my roommate Jacob said “I’m going to have trouble sleeping tonight…”

I have some friends who from time to time do this thing called link love to talk about some other blogs. Here is mine:

I found this really funny blog that I think you will like if you are in youth ministry…or even like youth ministry at all. Students Say the Darndest Things.

I took the idea and title from that blog and decided to dazzle the world with this beauty Katie Says the Darndest Things about one of my roommates. Enjoy folks.

Lastly, my roommates Braxton, Jacob, and I are not cutting our hair for the rest of the  year. Last night we also recruited the other guys from the New Orleans Mission Year team to do this with us. This blog will chronicle that, AND be about Godlyness/manlieness. Sons of Thunder.

Also, my friend Brett Levy is going to start blogging soon. It will be awesome. Look forward to that.

A little diddy about Jack and Diane

This diddy is actually about my friend Mike Jones (not the rapper…although, it would be cool if he and I were friends…). He is a pretty cool dude, and one of my best friends, we’ve been doing life together for about four years now, and I imagine that we will continue to do so for years to come (doing life together is about being intentionally involved in the lives of your close friends, and being iron for one another (Proverbs 27:17)…not anything about how you all think Mike and I are “together”). He is getting married next May to this chick Racheal (R-A-C-H-E-A-L that’s the way we spell RACHEAL!) and I’m pretty happy for them. I digress.

He recently started blogging (you’re welcome dude), and I wanted to give you guys a heads up about it. The blog he is writing is called Mikes Money Blogand it’s really good. This dude is a financial wiz. Before he was done with his sophomore year at Baylor University (he is about to go into his junior year) he had an internship with one of the Big Four tax agencies (I don’t know which ones they are, I just felt like they should get capped (not shot)). He’s always been good with money, and I’m pretty sure that is what he is going to be doing with his life.

So anyway, his blog is about his own financial journey as well as tips and what nots that he feels like anyone could use (but he mainly is speaking to the people our age…I think…) to get themselves started on their own responsible financial journey. I’ve read through most of the posts, and it’s all pretty legit. I highly recommend this to anyone who is wanting some advice about how to get themselves financially set for years to come, but ESPECIALLY to those of you who are around the same age as Mike and myself and are just starting out in the “real world”.

Love to the Jonsie,

David

Moleskin Or Moleskine?

If you’re anything like me (let’s pray that you’re not) when you hear the term ‘moleskin’ you think about that stuff your mom put on your blisters when you were a kid. Anyone? That stuff was wicked cool, and was guaranteed to make me forget about my blister…because I was busy playing with the moleskin…Thanks mom. (If your mom didn’t do this for you you should ask her why she didn’t love you).

From this point forward though, I think that my thinking on this word will be forever changed. Have you guys heard of the Moleskine Journals? They seem pretty legit, and I have talked to several people lately who have enjoyed using them. I am not 100% sure that I want one…but I am about 99% sure. So…yeah. I’m not entirely sure what I will use it for, but I’m pretty sure the possibilities endless. Since ‘blog’ is short for Web Log, and blogs are used for journaling/updating/providing information, I feel like this is a way to get in touch with the grass roots of blogging. What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Dave

P.S. – I had to edit this post, and I had gone back to their site, and realised I have been pronouncing it wrong. Very stupidly wrong. So in my head the two products were pronounced the same, so I made that connection. I stand by my decision to keep that connection in my head. Thanks. (I also retitled it)

Shoutouts

This is for my boys who have given me a shout out in the past couple days…that boils down to Jmob and Jaron Covey. Thank you true friends. You know who hasn’t shouted me out? Nic Burleson (I’m vain. I checked.) Despite his oversight of my new found love of blogging (p.s. I’m totally just giving him a hard time. He has a real job, and is getting ready to move churches and stuff. He is a busy man), I am going to shout him out too.

Jmob is a cool guy. He’s funny, and wicked creative. God has called him to do tech/video/sound stuff for church (i’m pretty sure thats right dude…if not please feel free to publicly chastise me) and that’s awesome. He brings a fresh perspective to a lot of stuff I thought I knew about, and brings to mind some things I’d never thought about. You can find his blog at http://jonathanmobley.com/

Jaron Covey is 3% less cool than Jmob. I love you dude…I’m just saying. In all seriousness though, he’s a great guy with a heart for the Lord. He’s also dating my good friend Jenna Coe (her blog is on my blogroll). She’s lucky he doesn’t quit her. His blog is http://acloserwalkwithjc.blogspot.com/

Last but not least, my buddy Nic Burleson. Like I said before, he is about to be headed over to The Connection Church in Kyle Texas (this is their site http://www.theconnectionchurch.org/). He’s been in ministry for quite some time, and he is excellent at what he does. Plus he’s really cool and funny. I wish him and Johanna (his wife whose blg you can ALSO find on my blogroll) all the best in this new season of their life. This is his blog http://nicburleson.blogspot.com. (At 11:54 am on 8/7/08 Nic posted his “Link Love”. I was not loved.)

Check out their blogs, and the ones in my blogroll, and the ones in my “Famous” Blogs.

Have a great day folks,

Stippick.
